The Library is an integral part of the learning process at USS. The library welcomes 100,000 student visits per year. The teacher-librarians provide students with instruction on how to prepare for research, access resources, process information and transfer learning into meaningful and impressive reports and presentations. The 5000 square foot facility includes 30 computer workstations, 13 group tables, 120 chairs, and 14,000 books. The library also loans out six LCD projectors, two of which are mounted on carts that include a computer and sound system. There is also a mounted LCD projector with an integrated sound system and ten foot screen. The teacher-librarians provide students with group and one to one instruction on how to make the most of this technology. Lessons on web page evaluation, plagiarism, power point, essay and report writing process, essay and report writing software, and the research process help students become competent in accessing and evaluating information as well as synthesizing the information into their own works. Recent studies “have documented an association between reading enjoyment and student achievement.” (People for Education Report 2006) The USS Library provides a welcoming reading environment and promotes reading programs such as the White Pine that encourage students to become lifelong readers.
The Library program provides a stimulating environment for students to become accomplished and technologically proficient information users and lifelong readers.
